If you’ve ever been caught in a riptide, pulled down into the water, then you know me. Or, more accurately, what I’m like when I’m angry.

Delia was beautiful, smart, and kind. He wasn’t. He said he loved her, but he didn’t know what love was. He was manipulative and cruel—more than a thief. A beast.

All she wanted was a rose…

These are the words on my sister’s grave. Her sadness, her obsession, forever a reminder I didn’t–couldn’t save her.

I’m not vindictive or cruel. I’m simply as the river–my memory is winding and my reach is long. I watched him steal her beauty, her essence. Watched him become a beast. He thought he’d get away with it, thought he’d go free.

I lay a rose upon my sister’s grave.

Light a candle for the beast.

Secret of the Souls release-Meet Hyla

Meet Hyla from Secret of the Souls, the second book in Terri Rochenski’s Pool of Souls series. I love to hear from the characters and find out what their side of the story is.

Thank you Hyla for taking time out from saving the nation.  I know you are busy, but we’d love to hear a little about your story.

Is there an object or possession in your life that you cherish and why?

My healer’s bag. It defines who I am, what sect I came from on Taran. While I don’t have the Gift of Healing, my herbs help those in need.

Do you have a crush on someone and if you just said yes you need to spill.

Conlin, a Native Soul-Walker, has burrowed his way into my heart, but nothing can come of it. Why? Because of the next answer.

Do you have a best friend?

Being a Seer makes it difficult to have friends. Seeing one’s aura and soul within their eyes makes it difficult to make friends, let alone trust anyone. No feelings are hidden from my Sight. No emotion – anger, betrayal, bitterness, lies – it’s all there for me to See.

What’s your family like?

Unfortunately, I have no true family. My mother showed upon Taran’s shores, burning with fever. She delivered me without uttering a word before her soul left to dwell with our ancestors. Soroca, our sect leader, raised me, but she could never be mistaken for a loving mother.

Where are you from?

A Native, I was born and raised on Taran, an island off the south-eastern shore of Durlund. Since we differ in looks from the humans, it makes for an easier to life to avoid the mainland. Yes, some of our people live among them, but I have no such wish.

SecretOfTheSouls-Cover-Final500Title: Secret of the Souls (Pool of Souls #2)
Author: Terri Rochenski
Publisher: J. Taylor Publishing
Release Date: October 6, 2014
Keywords: Adult Fantasy

Thrust out of their homes by a human High Priest on a vengeful mission, the Natives of Derlund no longer have a place to call their own. One escaped capture, however, and now she, Hyla, is the only one who can save her people.

For, Hyla, though, saving her nation isn’t her ultimate goal—returning to the Pool of Souls is. Becoming its Guardian and preserving their faith is her heart’s desire. The perils of her current journey, though, could leave her unable to fulfill that dream.

To find her way back to the Pool, Hyla must live among dangerous, powerful humans willing to defend the Natives, and must submit herself—her Talents—to them. While her protection is paramount, plots to end Hyla’s life will push her to her physical and emotional limits.

On the edge of sanity, her courage tested, and convictions nearly broken, Hyla’s final test of loyalty to her faith comes with the death of one she could have loved.

Terri started writing stories in the 8th grade, when a little gnome whispered in her brain. Gundi’s Great Adventure never hit the best seller list, but it started a long love affair with storytelling.
Today she enjoys an escape to Middle Earth during the rare ‘me’ moments her three young children allow. When not playing toys, picking them back up, or kissing boo-boos, she can be found sprawled on the couch with a book or pencil in hand, and toothpicks propping her eyelids open.

Welcome to Paradise, A Paradise Ranch Novella – New Release

(Depending on when you checked my blog, this post might not have been up. ) I am fighting with WordPress! (It tends to help if you pick the right year when you schedule something.) I am terribly sorry everyone.  Better late then never though, I hope!  Now that I have sufficiently embarrassed myself – let’s move on to the good stuff!

Don’t forget to read to the end of the post for a giveaway.  I’m so excited for this new release from London Saint James.

London thanks for stopping by. Can you tell us a little about what you think every story should have, in your opinion of course?

Thanks so much for having me on your blog today to talk a little bit about my new release, Welcome to Paradise. I had a great time writing this novella which is the introduction to a new western erotic romance series I’m writing called Paradise Ranch. When I sat down to start on Sutton’s story, I had a lot of ideas running around in my head, but there were a few things I tried to keep in mind, a blueprint so to speak of 10 things every story should have.

  1. Make the characters believable, likable, and relatable. Even the bad guys we love to hate have some redeeming qualities that peek through the cracks.
  2. Need chemistry between the characters.
  3. Stoke the fire and the intrigue.
  4. Got to have some drama (i.e., Bad choices, obstacles to overcome, hidden secrets, a past to come back and haunt one or more characters, love triangles, etc.)
  5. Be descriptive.
  6. Be creative.
  7. Insert some action and/or twists along the way.
  8. Add a dash of humor.
  9. Remember to also add some heartfelt emotion.
  10. Make the ending count, whether a HEA, HFN, or even an interesting cliffhanger for the next book to come. *Smiles*

London wrote her first short story in the second grade. Her teacher informed her parents she had a big imagination, and as far as he was concerned, having a big imagination wasn’t necessarily a good thing, so she placed her vivid characters, her childhood stories, along with her imagination on the shelf, where they would wither for a while. After all, she needed to grow up and do the “sensible thing.”  Life moved on, London grew up, and the sensible thing earned London a degree in Psychology. She took a serious job in the real world, doing serious things and being a responsible adult, although the need to be a little irresponsible crept in. As a result, she started scribbling again.  Happy to find her imagination was still alive and kicking, she decided to pursue writing, walked away from doing the sensible thing, took on the world of the written word, and has never looked back!

Want to know what Ms. Winters likes to read when she isn’t living in her alternate world?

Top 10 books.
1. Beast Behaving Badly: Shelly Laurenson. I’ve never seen characterization like hers. Blayne with her scattered wild dog/wolf/human shifter form. Bo, with his OCD schedule fettish and huge Lion/Polar Bear shifter form. She was a scattered, full of ADD energy, and he was an OCD freak with a schedule fetish. You didn’t care. You kept turning the page hoping to find another hundred pages behind it.
2. Dragon Singer: Anne McCaffrey. Why they don’t have a kindle version for the US is beyond me? I wanted to be Menolly. I wanted her talent for music. I wanted her way of making words out of thin air. I hated her father (and to a lesser extent) her mother. I understood why she ran away and I cheered when she was found. Did I say I loved this book yet? Well, I do.
3. This was a tossup. So I put two of my favorite novels up here because they are both by the same author. Remnant Population and The Speed of Dark by Elizabeth Moon. Elizabeth Moon has a way of placing you inside the novel. Of allowing you to not only understand the character but to be part of her world.
4. Enchanted Forest Chronicles: Patricia Wrede. Amusing, quirky, warped fairy tales that not only keep you engrossed in the plot but also, ah.. the romance.
5. Harry Potter and all 7 books by J.K. Rowling. There are thousands of essays on the web about Rowling and her worlds. I won’t repeat them here, just say I believe the positive, hate the negative and you’ll always find it on my kindle. Dog-eared copies are on the livingroom shelf.
6. Dune. Herbert. Loved this book. Intense, dramatic and full of life, no matter how twisted it was.
7. Darkness and Light: J.A. Belfield. Yes. You made the list. This book taught me a lot about characterization. us, I I loved Jem (??) and her romance with Sean.
8. Hit or Myth: Robert Asprin. Funny, the characterizations in his earlier word was spot on, even for the Alien characters.
9. Belgariad: David Eddings. I loved this series. I lived in this series for far too long.
10. Liaden Series. Steve Miller and Sharon Lee are masters at writing science fiction fantasy. I loved the speech patterns they created and the way they mold their characters.

I never set out to be an author. Only a story teller. Some days I succeed better than others.

Portals – A Fantasy Anthology Excerpt!

The Lunatic Queen – Michael Siciliano

The first one bounded out of the fog as we reached the edge of Grosnov. It looked like a long, sleek man. Naked and hairy, it ran on all fours and powered itself with elongated feet attached to bony hocks.

A frightened whimper escaped my mouth when I saw its expression.

Wolf fangs extended from a stubby jaw. Black lips turned upward near the face, giving the creature a perpetual cruel smirk. A mottled, bushy brow hovered over close-set, intelligent eyes. Eyes that glowed a faint icy blue.

“Tamara,” I called.

A moment later, she was by my side. We each held one of Yerik’s knives, their tips pointed at the creature.

It wove from side to side as it advanced on us.

“Where do you think you’re going,” the beast hissed in a soft masculine voice.

“It talks,” Tamara said. Fear and awe mingled in her voice.

“Yes,” he answered. “It does.”

About Michael Siciliano

Michael lives in Delaware and is married with a six year old son. He dreams of having his own writing room some day and rarely shuts up about it. An epic fantasy series, told from multiple points of view, takes up a large proportion of his writing efforts, but he also enjoys writing short stories. He has been known to take writing breaks by constructing Lego castles complete with barracks, forges and stables.  Legally blind since birth he naturally gravitates to interests that require acute vision. Reading would be impossible for him without his iPad, and therefore he is a strong proponent of eBooks and audio books. Playtime includes romping around with his son, reading, video games, TV shows, and movies.  He lives and breathes speculative fiction, and believes that somewhere down his family tree, Lannister blood must have mingled with the Italian. His idols growing up were Don Mattingly and Dan Marino, but are now George R.R. Martin and Jon Stewart.  Bed times average somewhere around 1:30am, and mornings are non-negotiable without strong coffee.
