Depending on the site you look at there is controversy on the 50 Shades series. Some focus that it was fan lit and is using someone elses writing. Others focus that the writing is poor at best and breaks every literary rule known to man. There are the TV shows and groups that focus on the erotic content and how it is either offensive or inspiring. It seems like there is a lot of jealousy as to the success of such poorly written stories and a lot of judgement on a life style most don’t find conducive.
To address the fan fiction issue, think of this way. Everyone is inspired by something. There are no new stories just new ways to tell the stories. Get over it. Stephanie Meyer would never have written this so i doubt she is finding it a problem.
For those that hate the writing. Well… i can’t defend the writing who could? It does break rules but you know what someone saw the potential and they were right. It sold and is making a lot of money. So you weren’t the one they chose. Keep writing and doing what you like. I wouldn’t want to be known as the author with a good story and horrible writing because i think that can taint you. I don’t think I would have read past the first chapter had a friend not coaxed me to do so.
As far as the erotic content… well it’s erotica. Duh. If you don’t like it don’t read it. Saying it is offensive doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. This is freedom of speech and life style. No I can’t say i would agree or even think about living this life style but that’s the beauty of humanity, to each their own. We are diverse. I can’t even keep up on all the talk shows commenting about the book.
In the end remember – it is a book people. Only a book. Do you think a murder mystery is controversial? That book might teach someone how to bury a body but no one is having issues with it.
